Is your website driving away customers?

As technology continues to advance, so do expectations for your website.

However, understanding what works and what doesn’t is definitely easier said than done. To help you, check out these common mistakes that many businesses are currently making that can be avoided.

1. Slow load times

There is nothing more frustrating to a visitor than waiting for your website to load. For that reason alone, people likely won’t return to your site again. In fact, according to Kissmetrics, 47% of people expect a page to load in 2 seconds or less. If it takes more than 3 seconds, 40% abandon the website altogether . It not only gives you an overall score, but gives you advice on how to improve the performance of your website.

2. Inactive/out of date content

Take a look at the content on your website. Is it updated regularly? If the answer is no, it’s definitely time to make some changes. After all, who wants to read about something that was only relevant in 1995? Refreshing your content on a regular basis keeps your customers coming back because there’s always something new and exciting for them to read that they find value in. This can include anything from blog posts to social media activity. The best way to achieve this is to set up a publishing schedule. The frequency depends on how often your customers return to your site. But whichever timeline you choose (weekly, monthly, etc), just make sure that you stick to it.

3. Poor navigation

When visitors land on your site, they need to be able to find where they want to go, quickly. You may offer the best products or services, but if they can’t locate the menu, chances are, they are going to get frustrated and leave. To ensure that this doesn’t happen, it is best to have one single menu that is easy to access. Too many options will only cause confusion. It also shows which areas are not working, what visitors are doing on your website and how far down they scroll. This data will allow you to fix problems fast to decrease drop-off rates and ensure customer satisfaction.

4.  Forced registration

When customers land on your site, they shouldn’t be bombarded with pop-ups or be required to give their email to view content.  While your website is definitely a lead-generation tool, irritating visitors to get your desired result isn’t the best way. Before asking your visitors to provide personal information, they need to see that what you’re providing is of value to them. Once they see this, they’ll signup by their own volition. Let it happen naturally. Provide value and leads will come.

5. Too much colour and clutter

A major mistake many businesses make is overwhelming their visitors with too much clutter on their website. This includes anything from crazy, illegible fonts, bright colours everywhere, too many photos, excessive pop-ups and long blocks of text. This can be very alarming to visitors who will get distracted and won’t understand your intended message. To ensure this doesn’t happen, everything on your website should have a purpose to help reinforce your brand. Break up your text into small paragraphs with headings, use images only when and where they make sense, and colour should be used sparingly to draw the attention of your customers to the areas you most want them to see. 6. Not Mobile Friendly

Having a mobile-friendly site is a must. Google ranks mobile friendly sites higher in mobile search results than those that are non mobile-friendly, since they wants visitors to have a great user experience when they reach your page. If it’s difficult to navigate around and see what they’re looking for, visitors tend to get frustrated and leave, having to constantly zoom in to view content. To avoid this, make sure you’re testing your site on all devices and viewing your site in multiple browsers to ensure consistency. There are also tests you can conduct, including the Mobile Friendly Test by Google. Simply type in your URL and it will instantly tell you if your site is responsive or not.
